One of Dublin’s foremost house & techno clubs could be closing
According to community Facebook page The Liberties, The Tivoli Theatre and the club it turns into on the weekend District 8 looks set for a redevelopment. This of course spells bad news for Dublin’s clubbing landscape.
The post reads, “At the other end of Francis Street, the Tivoli Theatre and adjoining carpark looks set to be redeveloped as an aparthotel under plans to be submitted shortly. The proposed development will see a 298-bedroom aparthotel in a new 5-6 storey building set around a courtyard. The theatre will be demolished while the currently disused terrace 140/143 Francis Street will be retained and incorporated into the new building.”
The situation of course sounds similar to Hangar on Andrew’s Lane which is set to close in 2018 to be replaced by a hotel.
Clubs and music venues are the essential foundation of the arts. So, the question is, what’s the point in luxury hotels if there is no culture to visit?
District 8 played host to some big names this winter like, ‘Ben Klock, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Mr.G, Jeff Mills & much more.
