After three and a half years, Unit 44, one of Dublin’s most popular cultural hubs, has announced it will close its doors by March 2025.

Located in Stoneybatter and run by music group, Kirkos, the venue was founded to create an inclusive and inviting space for artists and musicians of all backgrounds. It quickly became a vital part of Dublin’s arts scene, hosting more than 275 public events and over 500 rehearsals during its tenure.

The closing arises as the building’s ownership changes, signalling the end of an era for the venue, which has become synonymous with grassroots art and community in Dublin. Unit 44, known for its accessibility and eclectic programming, served as a platform for both young and recognised artists, fostering a sense of artistic community in the centre of the city.

The venue wrote via Instagram “Unit 44 has been a vital space in Dublin’s cultural scene. This closure underscores the challenges artists face in securing accessible, sustainable venues in Ireland.”

The statement wrote “Unit 44 has filled glaring gaps in Dublin’s music and wider cultural scene, and it will be missed by many people. The fact that this space could only emerge in a place that was affordable specifically because it was ephemeral speaks to systemic problems regarding arts infrastructure and a lack of proactivity and engagement from funding bodies and city councils.”
