Diageo has confirmed another price increase across its draught portfolio, with the hike set to take effect on 2 February.
Diageo has confirmed that from 2 February, the cost of its draught beers will rise again, by seven cents per pint, with Guinness 0.0 seeing a slightly steeper increase of ten cents. In Dublin and other city centres, that nudges the price of a pint closer to, or over, €7, continuing a trend that has already seen five hikes in just three years.
Pat Crotty, CEO of the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland, described the latest round of increases as “another layer of pressure” on pubs that are already operating on razor-thin margins. A single-digit price hike at the supplier level often translates into a 20-cent jump at the bar once VAT and other costs are added, a difference that regulars feel every weekend.
Ireland already has some of the highest alcohol prices in Europe, more than twice the EU average, according to Eurostat, and with another increase on the horizon, the country’s pub culture is becoming more costly than ever.
