The electro duo that made electro what it is today while they are still unique and relevant today with not only their music, but their ethos and characters behind the ground breaking music. Gerald Donald and late James Stinson make up the sub aquatic “Drexciyan” race fiction that descended from pregnant slave women thrown overboard during trans-Atlantic deportation. Their impact shaped the sound that we all know and love today. The list of inspirational tracks are huge, but we chose five of some of our favourite Drexciya tracks.
Drexciya – Andreaen Sand Dunes
Released as a part of the Neptunes Lair album in 1999 on the label, Tresor; this became one of the most favoured tracks chosen by listeners. Rain like hi-hats run along side a hypnotic high pitched sound that gels together when the bass line is introduced.
Drexciya – Hydro Cubes
Hydro Cubes seen its release in 1994 amongst the collection of tracks in the Drexciya 3: Molecular Enhancement album. Starting with an eerie bell like synth lead, it is taken over by a menacing bass line that drives the track throughout with breakdowns that consistently lead back into the distorted bass line.
Drexciya – Sea Quake
Appearing on the Drexciya Journey of the Deep Sea Dweller I album, water like acid is paired with a 4/4 beat that sees the introduction of vinyl scratch like sounds that come and go within the track. Different to most of their productions, this 4/4 styled track holds classic elements of Detroit house and techno.
Drexciya – Digital Tsunami
Driven by arps low and high, the EP that was released in 2001 held yet again some more elegantly made Detroit electro techno. The euphoric lead arp battles with the repeating bass line that creates an interchanging atmosphere from eerie and dangerous to hopeful and bright.
Drexciya – Black Sea
Another four to the floor track from the iconic duo makes for one of their best. A roaring bass line opens up throughout the track, making for its unforgettable sound, twinned with contrasting light pads that feature along the track’s timeline.
