Sam GreenwoodWe hand the controls over to Mark Davis, aptly named ‘darkmavis’ today, as the 24 year old Dublin based DJ and producer soundtracks our Wednesday afternoon.
darkmavis is a Dublin Digital Radio resident and the co-founder of Dublin based collectives Crane Club and the Common Ground, which also recently expanded to forming their own imprint, named ‘Talamh Records’ (Irish Language for Grounded).
He primarily produces experimental electronic music with influences taken from a variety of genres such as hardcore, experimental pop, gabber, techno, trance, club and jungle, reflecting in his playing styles, which he comfortably switches between during sets. His show, ’Donuts’ on Dublin Digital Radio, a platform which he started up as a monthly space to showcase forward thinking electronic music, featuring mixes and chat from himself and special guest DJs. As well as his own show, Mark has been heard on the Irish airwaves of RTE Pulse’s ‘Wriggle Show’ and ‘Gaff Party with DJ Sharpson’, Phever Radio and Dublin Digital Radio’s ‘Play Nice with sohotsospicy’ and ‘Choki Biki Radio’.
About this mix:
With my Four Four Local Selection Mix, I decided to bring listeners on a journey throughout most of the genres I like to play and included as many of my biggest musical influences that I could in this hour and a half long mix consisting of 39 Tracks. I also made sure to play tracks that have been my favourite discoveries and releases since the clubs closed down, which include tracks from Swedish imprint ‘Year 0001’s’ ‘Rift One’ VA, Evita Manji’s ‘Neptune’ EP, DJ Genderfluid and Chippy Nonstop’s super fun and queer take on techno, ‘Namasenda’s’ Hardcore Pop banger ‘Wanted’ from ‘PC Music’ and tracks from mega techno labels ‘Massive Gain’ and ‘Mama Told Ya’. The first hour consists of blends of techno, trance, experimental and experimental pop thrown in too, which progresses from 140BPM to 160BPM, then the mix moves onto an ambient interlude before a huge, heavy finish at 170BPM consisting fully of gabber and hardcore tracks, including a little unreleased one from myself.
I made sure to include nearly all of my biggest long term influences in this mix, from the late SOPHIE who has tracks feature throughout and who’s voice kicks off the mix with a little extract I took from an interview of hers where she discussed how far we have to come yet as a society of acceptance, to the hard hitting techno sounds of Clouds and Randomer, to the sounds of Daft Punk, Aphex Twin, Moloko/Roisin Murphy (with a cheeky trance edit) and Crystal Castles which influenced my tastes in electronic music in my early teens, to the experimental pop sounds of A. G Cook and Danny L Harle, who changed my perspectives on putting genres in a box in recent years, to tracks from the Casual Gabberz label who were a discovery that led me into embracing the gabber and hardcore sound which I had previously thought was a guilty pleasure and lastly to club producers with a hard and fast sound such as Jasmine Infiniti and STASYA who served as a huge inspiration in the creation of my recent ‘sodarksospicy’ EP with sohotsospicy. I could go on about every track really! So the full tracklist is below.
