The date is July 18th, 1996 and Stratford-upon-Avon is about to embark on the first ever 4 day festival in the UK, with 50,000 people descending on Long Marston Airfield.
Phoenix Festival boasted a line up consisting of dance music powerhouses; Leftfield, The Chemical Brothers, Goldie, Carl Cox, CJ Bolland, Hardflloor, Grooverider, plus the likes of David Bowie, Bjork, Placebo and the Sex Pistons to name but a few.
The Prodigy, however, are who we’ll highlight from this festival, with this rare fully recorded live show from the weekend, as they put in an incredible performance before handing the stage over to David Bowie.
With over 30 million records sold, two Brit awards and even an MTV Video Music award, The Prodigy are one of the most decorated dance acts of all time. They are known for compiling many different genres together, including, rave, hardcore techno, electro-industrial, jungle, breakbeat and big beat. Tracks like ‘Charly’ and ‘Firestarter’ shaped the rave scene in the 1990s and still sound as crisp as ever today.
Here’s the set list from the live show. It’s special.
Voodoo People // Breathe // Poison // Funky Shit // Weather Experience // Their Law // Diesel Power (Blow Your Mind version) // Skylined // Firestarter // Mindfields // No Good (Start the Dance) // Gabba
