Chaka Ravey is celebrating the Black origins of house and techno at Wigwam next month, shining a light on the Black cultural foundations of genres that were birthed in Black queer communities in Chicago and Detroit and continue to shape culture today.
The event champions the Black roots of house and techno by showcasing some of Ireland’s best Black artists, with the soundtrack provided by eDBOY, faxe on faxe, JWY, and Talinho. It honours the cultural foundations of these genres while also celebrating their forward trajectory within Ireland.
Too often in Ireland, the origins of house and techno are overlooked, with many people mistakenly believing these sounds come from Europe. Chaka Ravey is committed to re-educating audiences by highlighting the strong Black roots that house, techno, and club culture in general are built upon. House and techno is Black music, and we have a responsibility to honour and uphold that legacy.
