Berlin-born producer Paul Kalkbrenner is being honoured by his childhood football club, SV Sparta Lichtenberg, which has announced their home ground will carry his name.
The fifth-division side will see their stadium in Rummelsburg, previously known as Sportplatz Fischerstraße, officially become the Paul Kalkbrenner Sportfeld later this month, Berliner Morgenpost reports.
Club chairman Mathias Geyer described Kalkbrenner as “a true Lichtenberg boy” who once played for the team and has stayed close to its community over the years. Local officials were also involved in the decision to rename the ground.
The dedication will be marked with a naming ceremony on September 26th, followed by a charity match pitting Sparta against “Team Kalkbrenner.”
Kalkbrenner’s ties to the club stretch back decades. In 2014, shortly after Germany’s World Cup win, he performed at the ground when the trophy was brought to Lichtenberg, a celebration he reportedly helped facilitate.
