Yesterday, Robbie Kitt of Give Us the Night took to social media to address the rapidly declining prospects for later opening hours for clubs and venues in Ireland.

Despite years of government promises, the looming general election means that much-needed licensing changes are unlikely to happen anytime soon. As the government prioritises other legislation, the issue of nightlife reform is being ignored, and time is running out.

After the election, the new government will have to start from scratch on nightlife reform, potentially delaying changes for years. Currently, Ireland has fewer than 90 nightclubs, a number that continues to dwindle. In stark contrast to the past when Ireland boasted over 1,200 dance halls, the current landscape reflects a troubling decline in late-night venues. This lack of nightlife alternatives points to a broader social issue, undermining the government’s commitment to the public.

Most of these venues are not dedicated nightclubs, and only a handful in cities like Dublin, Galway, and Cork would benefit from extended hours. Additionally, cultural spaces such as art centres and galleries are barely represented in this conversation, with fewer than five in the country that would avail themselves of the proposed changes.

Voice your concerns to local representatives in the coming weeks, emphasising the importance of these venues for fostering a culturally vibrant and diverse Ireland.
