This spring, a new documentary that explores the socio-political origins of UK rave culture will be released in theatres, with an Irish premiere scheduled for Dublin at The Lighthouse on the 8th of April, with a special Q&A event.
Rave Culture: A New Era, directed by Eduardo Cubillo Blasco, will roll out across the UK, Ireland, and select US cities beginning 27 March, offering a look at the underground movement that reshaped global dance music.
The 87-minute film delves deeply into Britain in the late 1980s, a time of economic hardship and Margaret Thatcher’s divisive policies. In this context, rave culture developed as a means of resistance and escape, turning rural fields and deserted warehouses into makeshift havens for a generation looking to music for liberation.
The documentary features contributions from key figures, including Goldie, Fabio, and members of The Prodigy, alongside a wider cast of pioneers such as Orbital, General Levy, DJ Rap, and Slipmatt.
