In a new BBC documentary series, ICYMI, DJ and co-founder of Free The Night, Holly Lester, helps to unpack the realities behind opening nightlife spaces in Northern Ireland.

The documentary breaks down the complexities behind the “Lidl pub”. The case is used to explore licensing rules in Northern Ireland that determine who can and cannot open venues, from pubs and bars to clubs and grassroots cultural spaces.

The discussion centres on the licensing framework, which Free The Night campaigners say has failed to evolve in line with how culture and nightlife actually operate in 2026. Applications for alcohol licences can be lengthy and contested, and where objections are raised, they can be pushed into legal territory requiring High Court involvement.

While large-scale operators may be able to absorb the cost and complexity of that process, the documentary shows how smaller independent promoters and first-time venue operators are often left in a very different position. For them, legal escalation is rarely realistic, effectively raising the bar to entry before a venue even opens its doors.

The “Lidl pub” feels like a symptom of a broken system. One that favours well-resourced organisations, which can still end up navigating complex workarounds when standard routes are blocked or delayed.
