We caught up with Puzzy Wrangler ahead of their All-Night-Long Four Four Magazine show with us at Tengu this Saturday. The duo, fresh from their debut at Electric Picnic’s legendary Rave In The Woods stage, discuss their pre-gig routines, sound, playing an extended set, and more.
Since their debut in 2022, Puzzy Wrangler has swiftly established themselves as a DJ duo with a flair for genre-bending music. Their varied performances flawlessly integrate everything from old-school hard house to junglist breaks, UK bass, and baile funk, resulting in a distinct sound that defies categorisation.
Puzzy Wrangler’s work does not end at the booth; they are committed to collaborating with a variety of collectives to create projects that highlight the voices of underrepresented artists. Their dedication to inclusivity is reflected in their monthly mix series, which features emerging FLINTA DJs. This platform not only showcases new talent but also advocates for a more diverse and inclusive music scene.

Can you describe the Puzzy Wrangler sound?
Our sound is something that’s constantly evolving. Listening to our mixes from even a year ago will give you a totally different idea of PW, with electro and ghetto tech making up a majority of our music. Now our focus tends to lie in a more diverse combination of sounds that are interesting to us and have us moving from the first beat. Drums and breakdowns are really important- We lean into music that doesn’t get stagnant!

What can people expect from a Puzzy Wrangler All Night Long set?
They can basically expect anything and everything. While we’ve been really leaning into piano breakdowns and cheesy buildups, we’ve always liked grime and are more than partial to bass, baile and breaks. With an all-night-long, we hope to dip our toes into all our favourite subgenres and see where the set takes us.

Do you have any preset rituals?
Usually, we make an effort to either make or go and get a cocktail together. It’s a nice way to wind up for a set and usually sets the tone for our evening. Our go-to is 777 for a mezcal margarita and guava margarita (guess who’s who), but other than that we just prepare our playlists and make sure we’re in dancing spirit. Marlon Hoffstadt has the best preset mantra which is to take what you do seriously without taking yourself too seriously.

What has been your stand-out gig this year?
Rave In The Woods at EP was a crazy one for us. To get to play some of our favourite hard house and dance with that many people was so special. Our all-night-long with Foxgluv in Wigwam was also a major highlight for this year. It was our first time properly playing vinyl in a club and the crowd was just so up for anything.
