Friends and supporters have launched a fundraiser to help Keith McIvor, aka JD Twitch of Optimo, access essential care following a terminal brain cancer diagnosis.
Keith McIvor, widely known as JD Twitch, one half of the iconic Glasgow duo Optimo, has been diagnosed with an inoperable and terminal brain tumour, prompting an outpouring of support from the global music community. In response to a wave of messages asking how to help, a Crowdfunder has been launched to ensure Keith receives the urgent and sustained care he now needs.
McIvor’s diagnosis of glioblastoma, an aggressive and currently untreatable form of brain cancer, has significantly impacted his mobility, speech, and independence. While he is still mentally present and able to communicate with support, he now requires 24-hour nursing care to manage symptoms and maintain quality of life in what is expected to be a limited remaining time.
Despite efforts to secure hospice placement via the NHS, Keith’s condition hasn’t yet met the advanced symptom threshold typically required for end-of-life referral. After facing bureaucratic hurdles, including a mistakenly closed social work case, his family and close friends made the difficult decision to move him into private residential nursing care.
“Keith is still very much Keith,” the statement reads. “He’s present, engaging, and surrounded by people who love him — this space gives him the dignity and peace he deserves.”
The fundraiser aims to cover the cost of his current care and to support further services, including physiotherapy, speech therapy, counselling, and essential palliative care needs like accessible transport and adaptive equipment. Reaching the target goal is expected to fund between eight to twelve weeks of care, after fees and taxes.
As of now, those closest to him are focused on making every moment count. “We hope Keith can look forward to many more good days ahead,” they write, “surrounded by comfort, care, and the love of those around him.”
