Glasgow Underground boss Kevin McKay has warned that AI-generated music is already reaching the top of Beatport charts after discovering a fully AI-made track that went undisclosed by its creator.

Yesterday, DJ, producer, and Glasgow Underground label owner Kevin McKay posted on Instagram about an AI-generated track that reached number one in its genre on Beatport. In his post, he reflected on a recent experience involving AI music, in which he had approached an artist he admired for a track, only to later discover it had also been created using AI, though he did not name either artist.

He explained that one of the tracks in question was made using Suno, a generative AI music platform that enables users to create full songs, including lyrics, instrumentals, and vocals, through simple text prompts, without requiring traditional musical skills or instruments. According to McKay, “There was no stems. The whole thing was prompted by Suno.”

He added, “The same artist had a Beatport number one. Fully AI. Nobody knew,” noting that the music’s quality made it difficult to distinguish from human-made productions. “This isn’t AI slop, it’s convincing, chart-topping music that sounds exactly like the rest,” he wrote, emphasising that the track’s success highlighted how seamlessly AI-generated music can integrate into existing scenes.

When asked why he did not disclose the identity of the artist using AI, McKay responded that his intention was not to name and shame but to raise awareness: “This was never a callout. It’s a warning. The person made a track with a legal tool. Their mistake was not being upfront about it, and we caught it before release.”
