Max HeyraudLimerick’s legendary Costello’s Tavern is set to reopen this autumn, bringing one of the city’s most recognisable nightlife institutions back to Dominic Street.
Closed since March 2020, the pub and music venue has been a landmark of Limerick culture since first opening in 1970. For generations, it has been more than just a pub, it has been a place where Limerick’s nightlife, music and social life lived.
The venue became known for its upstairs bar and music space as a unqiue late-night offering in the city. It never had a distinct crowd, attracting people from all walks of life, with a broad spanning range of music making Costello’s one of the city’s most distinctive places to go out.
Now, after more than six years away, that chapter of Limerick nightlife is set to return. Owner Flan Costello has confirmed that refurbishment work is underway, with the aim of having the venue nearly completed by the end of October.
For many locals, the return is about more than reopening a pub. Costello’s is part of Limerick’s cultural memory, a place associated with nights out, music, friendships and generations of people growing up in the city.
