This week’s Mix of the Week comes from Berlin-based Taurean, who supplies a deep and rolling dub techno journey as part of the Irish FLINTA Takeover* on Refuge Worldwide.
Berlin, a city home to many Irish expats, is where they dive deep into the techno rabbit hole, riding rings around the city’s playground-like infrastructure and immersing themselves in its club culture. It’s a breeding ground for musical exploration and an educational journey for those eager to learn how techno should sound and be presented. Having moved last year, Taurean is reaping the rewards of this environment, widening her musical tapestry and refining her sonic palette. Her latest mix for Refuge Worldwide is a testament to that evolution.
Clocking in at just over an hour, “Dubs Out!” is a smoky, gritty, yet deeply melodic ode to early club hours. It’s rich with dubby, chord-driven textures, where powerful dub chords sing through gnarly atmospheres and gut-wrenching bass drums. While rooted in dub techno, the mix doesn’t stay confined to one sound—it moves fluidly across the deeper, more introspective realms of house and techno. There’s no fluff here; every track has a purpose, and most impressively, the mix unfolds effortlessly, as if it were an instinctive, unscripted narrative.
From trudging 125 BPM dark techno cuts to skippy, fluorescent house grooves, from Drexciyan classics to the slippery minimalism of 2010-era Ostgut-Ton and Mote Evolver releases, Taurean keeps it deep, tasteful, and ever-flowing.
