When The Music Ends is inspired by real stories from anonymous contributors and follows the personal journeys of three individuals from high-risk groups identified in a study by the Electronic Music Inclusion Initiative, in partnership with MeToo Music. Co-produced by DJ and producer Rebekah Teasdale, known as Rebekah, the project is sponsored by Beatport, Pioneer, Safer Dance, Ravemore, and Reprise Talent Agency.
When The Music Ends, inspired by recent research by the Electronic Music Inclusion Initiative, tells the personal tales of three anonymous people negotiating the hurdles of a nightlife culture where abuse is often unchecked. Through their testimonies, the film shows the continuous reality of sexual harassment in club environments, as well as the long-term consequences for individuals who are impacted.
The video, part of MeToo Music‘s #ForTheMusic campaign, was produced by Berlin-based Spilt Milk and written and directed by Mo Kanaan. It stars Luna Baptiste, Frederic Balonier, Justus Riesner, Vincent Ercolani, and Lujain Mustafa, among others.
Incidents involving gender or sexual orientation have a substantial impact on women of colour, highlighting intersectionality. Microaggressions and unwelcome physical contact are common in a variety of venues, including clubs, concerts, and the workplace. Artists and DJs emerged as key correspondents. The findings highlight the need to address industry-wide concerns.
The film serves as a call to action, encouraging industry leaders, venues, and patrons to work together toward creating environments where safety and respect are the standard.
