Berlin is set to lose another of its most iconic club institutions, Watergate, as the renowned club has announced it will close its doors at the end of 2024. The club told Resident Advisor that the closure is financially motivated “We’re facing enormous financial pressure, which ultimately led us to the decision not to extend the club’s lease.”

The closure of Watergate followed just a few months after that a similarly renowned club space, Renate announced their closure also for financial reasons. Cofounder Ulrich Wombacher told Resident Advisor “Unfortunately, the realities of inflation, the energy crisis, rising costs in general, and, not least, the high rent for this beautiful location in the heart of the city at Oberbaumbrücke on the Spree,”.

Watergate, which opened in 2002, quickly became a staple of Berlin’s nightlife, attracting top international DJs and building a cult following with its distinctive layout and interior. Situated in the heart of the city, its prime location overlooking the River Spree made it one of Berlin’s most unique and visually visually pleasing dance spaces.

Watergate’s farewell program will kick off in October, coinciding with its anniversary, and continue until the club’s closure. The lineup features standout performances by Kerri Chandler, Richie Hawtin, DJ Minx, Sven Väth, Charlotte de Witte, and Marlon Hoffstadt. Additionally, the farewell series will host renowned parties such as Club Heartbroken, New Kids on Acid, Multisex, and Mala Junta.

The exact date of the clubs closure is yet to be confirmed.
