A new welfare area will open in Dublin’s city centre on Friday, providing support and a safe space for late-night revellers at Foster Place, College Green from 11pm – 4am. The initiative, led by Ray O’Donoghue, the city’s new night-time economy advisor, is part of a larger effort to improve Dublin’s after-hours scene and promote safety.
The welfare zone, which was successfully trialled during Culture Night, is intended to assist those who have consumed too much alcohol or other substances, as well as anyone who requires a safe and supportive environment during a night out. The area, staffed by medics, security, and welfare officers, aims to assist anyone in need.
Mr. O’Donoghue explained the approach, “It’s something that we’re having conversations around. The idea would be to potentially look at a calendar of events throughout the year, so it may not be 50 weekends of the year, but maybe 10 or 20 weekends, or something along those lines.”
This initiative marks an important step in making Dublin a safer and more welcoming city for nighttime activity, with plans to expand these welfare zones throughout the year.
