Spotify and Universal Music Group have struck a new licensing agreement that could redraw the boundaries between streaming, fandom, and generative AI by formally allowing listeners to create AI-generated covers and remixes of selected tracks.

The deal introduces what the companies are positioning as a paid Premium add-on: a tool that lets users generate reinterpretations of licensed music, ranging from stylistic remixes to full AI-assisted cover versions. The feature will only apply to participating artists and rights holders.

Spotify and Universal Music Group describe the initiative as both a creative expansion and a financial one. The companies say it is designed to open new revenue channels while ensuring artists and songwriters are compensated when their work is used as the basis for AI-generated outputs.

The move is a sign of a broader change across the recorded music industry, which is now scrambling to develop systems for generative AI before the technology outstrips rights management altogether. Labels and platforms are increasingly experimenting with controlled AI environments in which training data, output rules, and royalties are defined in advance rather than litigated after the fact.

At the same time, streaming platforms have taken steps to manage AI-related content at scale. Spotify previously removed tens of millions of AI-generated tracks flagged as spam, while Bandcamp has opted to prohibit AI-generated music entirely.

The new agreement sits within this broader tension between expanding creative tools and controlling rights management, as the industry tries to define how AI-generated music should be licensed, attributed, and monetised.
