Sunil Sharpe of Give Us The Night is calling on Dublin City Council to tighten noise policies as the city expands its mixed-use “urban districts.” Speaking at Monday’s Arts SPC, Sharpe warned that without stronger safeguards, central Dublin’s nightlife could “completely disintegrate.”

“Venues, especially established ones, should not be finding themselves in the high court,” he said, praising the council’s existing noise framework but insisting it must go further.

Sharpe welcomed initial talks with SPC chair Darragh Moriarty and the Assistant Chief Executive, emphasising that the goal isn’t more noise for residents, but “robust, transparent policies that can protect everyone’s interests.”

With new construction generating the most noise complaints in 2025, Sharpe suggested property developers should shoulder more responsibility. He also noted that hotels, while numerous, can still coexist with nightlife: “Our hope is that relationships can be strengthened going forward, especially where they are currently frayed.”

As Dublin develops, advocates are urging proactive measures to safeguard both the city’s residents and its night-time economy.
