Max HeyraudSynthesize_Her is bringing its collaborative approach to sound-making technology to Belfast this September, with a four-hour workshop specifically designed to create space for women and marginalised genders.
Taking place at Accidental Theatre on Friday, 4 September, the workshop will be led by producer, DJ and engineer Viva Dean, aka Bé, alongside Róisín Berg of Concept Null. The project is gender-inclusive, with women and marginalised genders prioritised, and is open to anyone aged 18 and over, regardless of previous experience or technical ability.
A key part of Synthesize_Her’s approach is its focus on the history of women and gender minorities in sound production. By combining this historical context with practical experimentation, the project aims to challenge the idea that technical knowledge and electronic music hardware are inherently male spaces.
This workshop is an intentionally accessible entry point for those who may not traditionally feel represented in electronic music or technology environments. Participants do not need to see themselves as musicians, producers or engineers, and no prior technical knowledge is required.
“Who gets to create and innovate our technology?” is one of the questions at the heart of Synthesize_Her. The project seeks to broaden that answer by putting women and marginalised genders at the centre of a space dedicated to learning, making and experimentation.
The Belfast session runs from 10am to 2pm, with tickets priced at £5 plus booking fee. Places are limited. The workshop is presented with support from Moving On Music, Outlands Network and PRS Foundation, as part of the project’s wider programme.
