Max HeyraudMore than 550 rarely seen photographs documenting 35 years of club culture will be published in In Clubland: 35 Summers of Love, a new book by Liverpool photographer Mark McNulty.
Published by Modern Sky on November 5, the 240-page collection traces the evolution of nightlife from the birth of acid house through the ’90s rave explosion and into the festival and club scenes of today.
McNulty’s camera has captured nights at legendary institutions including Quadrant Park, The Hacienda, Back to Basics, Tresor, Cream and Lakota, alongside appearances from artists including Daft Punk and The Chemical Brothers.
The project moves beyond the DJs and the dancefloors to capture the broader culture that enveloped them: the crowds, the fashion, the after-hours parties, and the passing moments that made each era so unique.
The archive stretches into the 2000s and beyond, covering nights such as Bugged Out!, Garlands and Club EVOL before concluding with Liverpool’s Eurovision celebrations in 2023.
“The scenes that we thought were ours have just evolved and changed,” McNulty says. “The world carries on, and the discotheque most certainly doesn’t stop for anybody.”
