A motion brought forward on behalf of nightlife advocacy group Give Us The Night and Sunil Sharpe, calling for the creation of new designated poster locations in Dublin, has been passed by councillors following discussion at this week’s Strategic Policy Committee (SPC) meeting.

The proposal aims to preserve the visibility of arts and music culture in the city through physical gig and event posters, reinforcing the role of street-level promotion in Dublin’s cultural life.

Central to the discussion was criticism of Dublin City Council’s position that arts and music promotion has largely shifted online. In its official response, the council stated that “arts and music promotions have moved more or less 100% onto online and social media platforms,” a view strongly rejected by the motion’s proposer.

They argued that this perspective underestimates the continued cultural importance of physical poster infrastructure. They said they hoped ongoing conversations around public cultural space could help “preserve and re-spread some of the simple parts of our culture, like putting up and seeing gig posters around Dublin City.”
